How Long is the Divorce Procedure in Singapore?

For uncontested divorces where couples agreed on both the grounds for divorce (for example, unreasonable behaviour, adultery, desertion, separation, or divorce by mutual agreement applicable from 1 July 2024) and all ancillary maters (children’s’ care arrangement, maintenance of wife and children, division of matrimonial assets and property, and cost of divorce proceedings) can proceed on the simplified track.

According to MSF, the divorce process on the simplified track takes approximately 1 month to obtain an interim judgment of divorce, which dissolves the marriage. After that, couples must wait for a mandatory 3 months period before applying for the final judgment, which settles all ancillary matters.

It may not always be possible for couples to reach a full agreement on the reason for divorce and all ancillary matters before starting divorce proceedings. However, it is possible to reach an agreement on contested issues during the court process. If an agreement is reached, the divorce will be considered uncontested, and the normal track can be shortened.

According to MSF, the divorce process typically takes 6 to 12 months. This includes a mandatory 3 months period after obtaining the interim judgment before the Court grants the final judgment for divorce.

If the divorce involves highly contested issues, the proceedings usually take more than 12 months, depending on the nature of the dispute.
