Yuen Law named “Recommended Firm”, Lim Fung Peen named Litigation Star in 2024 Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific

We are very proud to celebrate a double win for our Private Wealth & Family Practice in the 2024 edition of Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific, as well as our Disputes Resolution team’s rise in ranking over last year’s.

Lim Fung Peen makes his debut as a Litigation Star in family and matrimonial matters in the 2024 edition of Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific.

A Director and Head of Private Wealth & Family Practice Group at Yuen Law, Fung Peen has been widely praised by appreciative clients and is a highly-regarded veteran among his peers.

His outstanding leadership has cultivated a remarkable team known for offering clients empathetic guidance and invaluable advice. Their stellar work has also been recognised by Benchmark Litigation with a Tier 3 ranking for dispute resolution in family and matrimonial matters.

“Family disputes are messy, raw, and oftentimes ugly. As lawyers, we train ourselves to listen and get to the heart of what our client wants.  We guide our clients towards an amicable resolution where possible to help immensely in minimising further rancour and pain,” says Fung Peen.

“We are committed to achieving the best outcome for clients, and that is gratification in itself. But Benchmark Litigation’s recognition of my efforts and my team’s good work is definitely the icing on the cake.”

We also congratulate our Disputes Resolution Practice Group for earning an improved Tier 5 ranking in commercial and transactions litigation and disputes resolution matters.

Led by Director Amos Cai, the team debuted on Benchmark Litigation in 2023 as a Notable firm in the same category.

About Yuen Law’s Private Wealth & Family Practice Group

This highly specialised team excels across the breadth of Family and Matrimonial matters, and handles contentious family matters – mostly divorce cases involving highly complex maintenance and division of matrimonial assets and child custody and access matters. We are also well-versed in handling domestic violence cases, adoption, and contested probate matters.

Some of the favourable outcomes we have secured for our clients include:

  • Secured an unprecedented, shared care and control order in favour of the defendant husband for the young children.
  • Defending the respondent in a complex Protection from Harassment Act (POHA) case Involving a minor with special needs, and successfully obtaining a resolution through court-mandated mediation.
  • Secured a favourable settlement for a defendant wife in a contested divorce after a four-decade marriage, involving a high-stakes matrimonial asset dispute and dissipation.

The heart of our approach is centred on understanding the unique dynamics of each case. Our strategy is deeply rooted in the principles of therapeutic justice, as envisioned by the Singapore Family Justice Court. We advocate mediation and private negotiations, which predominantly lead to amicable resolutions, ultimately minimising legal fees and reducing acrimony.

While our operations are based in Singapore, our strong relationships with law firms around the region allows us to effectively address the complex legal needs of clients with international interests and connections.

This is in light of the increasing number of divorces in Singapore involving foreign spouses. We manage forum and jurisdiction disputes, and handle proceedings related to cross-border assets and the rising prevalence of international child relocation cases.

About Yuen Law’s Dispute Resolution Practice Group

The Disputes Resolution Practice led by Director Amos Cai and supported by Director Denise Teo and Associate Director Lim Yun Heng is rapidly gaining recognition as a rising force in dispute resolution work.

Our firm has represented a diverse range of businesses and high-net-worth individuals in complex litigation and dispute resolution proceedings. Our lawyers strive to understand the unique dynamics of each case and explore every facet of the law to achieve the most favourable outcome possible for clients.

The team is well versed in acting for clients in shareholders disputes, minority oppression and derivative action claims, investment and commercial disputes, debt recovery, employment disputes, construction claims, disciplinary proceedings at the Singapore Medical Council, and SIAC and SIA (Singapore Institute of Architects) arbitration.

Over the last year, the disputes practice group acted for clients in complex dispute matters. Some highlights include:

  • Representing the claimant, Duke Bakery Pte Ltd in a case involving claims related to breaches of directors’ duties by the first and second defendants, breach of duties by the third defendant in their role as finance manager, and misappropriation of funds by all three defendants, totaling to SGD 3 million.
  • Representing the defendants, Eon Reality Inc and Eon Reality Pte Ltd, companies specialising in augmented and virtual reality solutions, in a case involving a SGD 1 million commission claim by an employee, and a counterclaim against the employee for breaching their duty of care to the company, amounting to SGD 1.5 million. The defendants dispute the amount of commission due, specifically for projects where the engagement with their clients turned sour. The Court awarded judgement that was less than what the plaintiff had claimed.
  • Acting for an Indian-based telecommunications company and its Singapore-based subsidiary in arbitration proceedings against a leading US-based telecom solutions provider for breach of contractual obligations, and successfully reached a settlement in favour of our client.
