Employment disputes are a growing concern in Singapore especially in these precarious times where layoffs are unfortunately becoming commonplace. Channel News Asia’s Wui Lynn Chew speaks with Yuen Law’s Managing Director, Samuel Yuen to discuss employment disputes and what to do if you are entangled in one.
In this session, Samuel shared his expertise on wrongful termination, the legal support available in employment disputes, and rights of retrenched employees. His insights are particularly pertinent in today’s job market, where salary claims among local workers have slightly increased – rising from 1.29 per 1,000 local employees in 2022 to 1.32 in 2023. Samuel and Wui Lynn also discussed common issues such as wrongful dismissals, non-compete clauses, and retrenchment benefits.
Other questions from Wui Lynn and listeners answered by Samuel include:
- What rights does a person have if they are laid off? Are they always entitled to benefits?
- Who can go to the Tripartite Alliance for Disputes Management (TADM)? And when do they go to TADM?
- Earlier this year, some workers from Lazada were retrenched and were expected to observe a 12-month non-compete agreement. Are such agreements enforceable in Singapore?
