In the recent Committee of Supply Debates, the Ministry of Manpower announced changes to Singapore’s Work Permit framework, effective 1st July 2025. Key updates include:
- The removal of the maximum employment period for non-traditional source Work Permit holders.
- An increase in the maximum employment age for Work Permit holders.
To explore how recent changes help employers retain experienced and skilled workers for longer in industries facing labour shortages, our employment law expert, P. Padman, joined Lance Alexander and Daniel Martin to unpack these updates. They discussed the impact on businesses, employers and foreign workers, as well as what employers should consider, including how these changes affect long-term hiring strategies, such as salary progression and insurance coverage.
In this episode, Padman discusses:
- Why were changes made to the Work Permit framework?
- How will these changes impact Singapore’s economy and businesses?
- How do changes to the Work Permit framework affect Work Permit holders?
- Will the Work Permit framework continue to evolve over time?
As MOM continues to refine workforce policies, companies should reassess their hiring and retention strategies to align with these upcoming changes.
