Last week, Singapore Management University invited our Associate Director Tris Xavier to deliver a workshop on “Using Copyrighted Music and Musical Works in the Classroom” at the SMU Libraries’ Copyright Conference 2024.
With about 150 participants in attendance during Tris’ live webinar, Tris discussed:
• Types of rights and ownerships in musical works
• How educators can avail of fair use and express permissions in the Copyright Act 2021 to incorporate musical works into their classes
Participants asked thoughtful questions about proper copyright ownership attribution, and what happens when artistes collaborate with other artistes or when artistes cover other artistes’ works, highlighting the practical challenges in applying copyright laws.
Thank you SMU for having us at such an insightful web conference!
