“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” – Psalm 18:2

‘I am a rock, I am an island

And a rock feels no pain

And an island never cries’

These lyrics from the famous Simon & Garfunkel hit continues to appeal to many of us, especially in today’s culture and climate, which emphasizes individualism, independence, and personal autonomy. Indeed, in a world of competition and uncertainty, who can one count on beside oneself? Words like “dog-eat-dog”, “ruthless”, and “cutthroat” are not uncommon in the discourse of the workplace. It does not always seem ideal or wise to rely on others, and many of us have had unpleasant experiences in the past when it comes to trusting and depending on our associates, business partners, colleagues or co-workers. We resort to relying on ourselves, functioning as independently as possible.  In such a reality, you would really have to be infallible and as hard as a rock in order to make it out of the melee alive, perhaps even committing deeds along the way which may cause us to die a little inside.

God is our impenetrable Rock and unfailing fortress (Psalms 18:2). The psalmist, David, declares the Lord as the most reliable and unchanging force, who delivers him and shields him from harm. The psalm was written on the day that God saved him from all of his enemies. David recognizes his human limitations and acknowledges God’s power, might, and ability to hold one steady through the vicissitudes of life.

In the big and small, major and minor, let God be your steady rock. Surrender to His might and trust that you can rely on Him. In times of difficulty, find rest in Him for He holds you and will shield you from harm.

Start by acknowledging your limitations and your need for God. He is a God who knows what we need before we ask (Matthew 6:8), and is only a prayer away – ask that He helps you in your situations and pluck your feet out of the snares. You are safe with him.
